A mother has shared her daughter’s journey of quitting dance lessons due to what was initially thought to be ‘growing pains,’ only to discover a ‘golf-ball-sized’ tumor in her throat.
Cheryl Barber noticed concerning signs in her 11-year-old daughter, Tamelia Felway, in September 2022, including fatigue, aches, and weight gain, prompting her to seek medical advice. Despite reassurances from their GP that it was just normal growth and puberty, Cheryl persisted due to her gut feeling. In September 2024, a lump on Tamelia’s throat raised further alarms, leading to the removal of the tumor after a prolonged period of tests and consultations.
In November 2025, doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital diagnosed Tamelia with thyroid cancer, and she commenced radiotherapy in May 2028. Cheryl’s determination through the diagnostic process led her to urge other parents to trust their instincts. She set up a GoFundMe page to assist with hospital expenses while caring for her two-year-old daughter, Lily.
Describing Tamelia’s ordeal, Cheryl recalled the gradual onset of symptoms like tiredness and weight gain, attributing them initially to the normal course of growing up. However, the discovery of the lump prompted further investigation, revealing the presence of thyroid cancer.
Tamelia’s GoFundMe has garnered over £3,200 in support, aiding in her ongoing battle against two types of thyroid cancer. Cheryl emphasized the importance of parental intuition in navigating the complexities of healthcare, urging others to advocate for their children’s well-being.
Thyroid cancer typically affects the thyroid gland located in the neck region, manifesting symptoms such as neck lumps, hoarse voice, sore throat, and swallowing difficulties. Treatment options may include surgery, hormone therapy, radioactive iodine treatment, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.
