A mother has shared the harrowing experience of her family vacation turning into a nightmare when doctors warned that her 19-month-old son was at risk of death after falling seriously ill.
Lara Holt, from Liverpool, recounted the terrifying ordeal where her son, Cillian, contracted food poisoning during their trip to Egypt, leading to a rare and life-threatening condition.
Describing it as the most frightening moment of her life, Lara expressed the sudden shift from suspecting food poisoning to being informed about the possibility of her baby going into cardiac arrest.
The family’s holiday in Hurghada took a drastic turn when Richard, Lara’s husband, fell ill, followed by Lara and their daughters, Lily-Mae and Olivia, experiencing similar symptoms shortly after.
Despite efforts by a hotel doctor to treat the family, Cillian, being too young for medication, and Lara, due to her health issues, faced challenges in managing the situation, prompting them to consider cutting their holiday short.
Struggling to find early return flights, the parents grew increasingly worried as Cillian’s health deteriorated, with him becoming lethargic and weak, pushing them to seek urgent medical attention.
Upon returning to the UK, while the rest of the family recovered, Cillian’s condition worsened rapidly, prompting a visit to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS) stemming from an E.coli infection.
Cillian underwent emergency treatments, including kidney dialysis, blood transfusions, and other interventions, with Lara describing the experience of seeing her son in the hospital as heart-wrenching.
After a period of uncertainty, Cillian showed signs of recovery, allowing his family to hold him again, marking a significant moment of relief amidst the ordeal.
Following a 21-day hospital stay, Cillian, now an eight-year-old boy full of energy, still requires ongoing monitoring for potential kidney damage and recently underwent surgery related to the illness.
Reflecting on the lasting impact of the traumatic event, Lara emphasized the importance of trusting parental instincts and seeking immediate medical attention if children show concerning symptoms after illness abroad.
Lara’s message to other parents is to stay vigilant and not hesitate to seek medical help if they sense something is amiss, underscoring the need for swift action in such situations.
