A mother has issued a caution about the typical signs of colon cancer following the passing of “Married At First Sight” personality, Mel Schilling. Jasmin Gobel, who underwent five rounds of chemotherapy and daily radiotherapy after her diagnosis, aims to raise awareness of colon cancer to help others identify symptoms early and seek medical attention before reaching a critical stage.
Upon experiencing constipation, altered bowel movements, and abdominal discomfort, Jasmin consulted her doctor, leading to a diagnosis via a CT scan and colonoscopy in the summer of 2024.
The recent announcement of Mel’s death revealed that she had succumbed to colon cancer after it had metastasized to her lungs and brain’s left side, initially diagnosed in 2023.
Reflecting on Mel’s passing, Jasmin emphasized the importance of early symptom recognition, noting that her only initial symptom was prolonged period-like pains before hospitalization due to a blockage.
Initially attributing her stomach pain to post-menopausal abdominal discomfort, Jasmin eventually sought medical attention when she experienced irregular bowel movements six months later. Initially misdiagnosed with internal hemorrhoids and a UTI, a CT scan unveiled a bowel obstruction.
Subsequently, Jasmin underwent surgery for a stoma bag installation, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a recent pelvic exenteration procedure, removing various pelvic organs.
Supported by her partner and daughter, Jasmin urges individuals to promptly address any symptoms, such as stomach pain, with their healthcare provider as early symptoms can be subtle and easily mistaken for other ailments.
While the NHS notes that individuals aged 50 and above are at higher risk of colon cancer, the disease can also affect younger individuals, with its exact causes often unknown.
