“MP Pushes to Overturn Law Blocking Grooming Gang Leader’s Deportation”

Date:

Shabana Mahmood is determined to exhaust all possibilities in deporting a notorious grooming gang ringleader by proposing changes to existing laws that hinder his removal. The individual in question, Shabir Ahmed, recently released after a 14-year incarceration for multiple heinous crimes against underage girls, is the focus of efforts by the Home Secretary to facilitate his expulsion from the country.

During a session in the Commons, Ms. Mahmood highlighted plans to amend the Immigration and Asylum Bill currently under parliamentary review. The proposed modification aims to eliminate a 55-year-old legal barrier preventing individuals like Ahmed from being deported from the UK. This initiative is a direct response to the widely publicized case involving Shabir Ahmed and seeks to grant the Home Secretary new authority under section seven of the Immigration Act 1971 to handle serious criminal cases, ensuring that long-term UK residents are not shielded from removal when warranted.

Despite these legislative efforts, the successful deportation of Ahmed hinges on Pakistan’s willingness to accept him back. Presently, Islamabad has not shown readiness to comply with such requests, posing a significant challenge to the deportation process.

Acknowledging the complexities involved, Ms. Mahmood emphasized that altering the law alone does not guarantee Ahmed’s expulsion and reiterated her commitment, alongside the Foreign Secretary, to explore all avenues for his deportation. The existing legal obstacle, Section 7 of the Immigration Act 1971, presents a hurdle as it prohibits the removal of Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK over 50 years ago.

Justice Minister Catherine Atkinson emphasized the effectiveness of imposing visa restrictions on uncooperative nations in facilitating the return of their nationals, citing past successes with Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The government remains resolute in its determination to enforce Ahmed’s removal, emphasizing the need for collaboration from the offender’s home country.

While the process remains intricate and contingent on various factors, including diplomatic negotiations and legal frameworks, the government is actively exploring all avenues to address this challenging case. Pakistan’s reported demand for the extradition of political dissidents from the UK adds a layer of complexity to the situation, further complicating efforts to secure Ahmed’s deportation.

Overall, the government’s commitment to pursuing all available options underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination to uphold justice and protect vulnerable individuals affected by such criminal activities.
