MP Urges Review of Sentence for Coercive Sexual Abuse

Date:

An MP has called for a review of the sentence handed to a despicable individual who coerced a woman into engaging in sexual activities with up to 1,000 men without her consent.

James Wild, the Member of Parliament for North West Norfolk, has formally requested the Attorney General to reconsider the case of Rodney Johnston, who was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years following a trial at Norwich Crown Court. The victim expressed relief at being liberated after Johnston’s sentencing.

According to court proceedings, the victim was manipulated by the 67-year-old into participating in group encounters with numerous strangers over a span of three decades. Johnston utilized both physical force and psychological manipulation to compel her to engage in unrestricted encounters with men he solicited through online advertisements.

The abusive situation persisted until the victim’s children discovered explicit materials and alerted the authorities. Johnston was convicted by Norwich Crown Court on various charges, including forcing a woman into sexual activities through threats and intimidation, resulting in a minimum 16-year sentence.

Conservative MP Mr. Wild has invoked the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme to urge the Attorney General to refer the case to the Court of Appeal. In his plea, Mr. Wild emphasized the severity of the abuse inflicted on the victim and deemed the imposed 16-year sentence as inadequately lenient given the prolonged duration of the offenses and the victim’s vulnerability.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to locate individuals who participated in the victim’s exploitation. Testimony revealed that Johnston coerced the victim into numerous sexual encounters with strangers in public locations and hotels, all while recording the illicit activities. The victim was coerced into engaging in these acts under duress and fear.

During sentencing, Judge Alice Robinson condemned Johnston for his predatory behavior and described the coerced group encounters as akin to rape in nature. Johnston, a former caregiver, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years. The victim, protected by lifelong anonymity, shared her harrowing experience and expressed a sense of liberation after enduring decades of abuse.

Johnston’s manipulation tactics included isolating the victim from her social circle and monitoring her movements with a tracking device, as disclosed by prosecutor Stephen Rose KC. Johnston, residing in Starston, Norfolk, was found guilty of multiple offenses, including sexual coercion and controlling behavior spanning from 1994 to 2024.
