“MPs Push for Gov’t Action: Urgent Water Safety Campaign Needed”

Date:

Politicians convened in central Westminster yesterday to urge the government to take decisive action on water safety in anticipation of the upcoming school holidays.

The plea was prompted by the tragic loss of 13 children and six adults to drowning during the recent heatwave. Among the attendees was Lee Pitcher, MP for Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, a staunch advocate for ensuring the safety of young individuals near water bodies.

Pitcher emphasized the urgent need for governmental intervention, stating, “I’ve spoken with numerous grieving parents who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of their children to drowning. It’s an unimaginable tragedy, and we must prevent others from enduring such pain.”

With the summer season and increased alcohol consumption due to the World Cup approaching, Pitcher called for a comprehensive national awareness campaign to caution individuals about the hazards of entering open water unsupervised.

Pitcher, leading the charge on the Private Members’ Bill Sam’s Law focusing on water safety, joined forces with MPs, sports figures, activists, and bereaved families in supporting the Save Lives for Sam campaign by the Mirror. The collective appeal aims to prompt the government to launch an educational initiative before the six-week school break to educate youngsters on water safety.

Following the death of 16-year-old Sam Haycock in May 2021, his father, Simon Haycock, highlighted the misconceptions around open water swimming skills. He stressed the importance of understanding cold water shock, hidden debris, and other potential dangers present in natural water bodies.

At the event, various individuals shared their personal tragedies related to water accidents, underscoring the critical need for enhanced water safety awareness. Jim Dickson, MP for Dartford, recounted a recent drowning incident within his constituency, emphasizing the preventable nature of such tragedies.

Pete Kennedy, the Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the Royal Life Saving Society UK, commended the collaboration of MPs, charities, and bereaved families in pushing for immediate governmental action to prevent drownings. As Drowning Prevention Week approaches, the call for urgent public messaging before the school holidays grows more pressing.

An alliance of organizations, including the Royal Life Saving Society UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and several others, has united with the Mirror, MPs, and affected families to advocate for enhanced water safety measures. Olympic champions Becky Adlington and Tom Dean, alongside elite swimmer Michael Gunnin, have also lent their support to this crucial cause.

The collective efforts aim to achieve the following objectives:
– Enhanced water safety education
– Increased public awareness
– Swift governmental action to prevent drownings

By working together, these stakeholders are committed to safeguarding lives and preventing future water-related tragedies.
