“MPs Under Fire for Subsidized Drinks Before Votes”

Date:

Green Party member Hannah Spencer has confronted Keir Starmer regarding the issue of discounted drinks for MPs in parliament. Spencer, who represents Gorton and Denton, expressed discomfort with the prevalent drinking culture in Parliament and raised concerns about MPs consuming subsidized alcohol before important votes, citing instances of unprofessional and risky behavior.

During a session of PMQs, Spencer highlighted the contrast between the prices of drinks in her constituency and in Parliament, emphasizing the inappropriateness of MPs drinking before making crucial decisions in their workplace. She questioned whether MPs should be allowed to drink cheap alcohol while on duty, especially considering the weighty matters they vote on, such as the climate crisis, disability rights, housing, and child poverty.

In response, the Prime Minister welcomed Spencer to Westminster and took a swipe at Green Party leader Zack Polanski over tax issues related to his residence on a houseboat. The PM emphasized the importance of an economy and public services that benefit the majority of people and took a dig at the Green Party’s leadership, insinuating that actions speak louder than words.

Polanski later issued an apology following scrutiny over his council tax payments for his houseboat in east London, as government guidelines stipulate that individuals may be liable for council tax if the boat is their primary residence.
