A wealthy young woman, Caroline von Rantzau, was tragically killed by a gunshot at a high-end safari lodge in South Africa. This incident occurred just a day after another individual, Arno Koën, who was a trusted financial manager at the same estate, was also found dead due to a gunshot wound.
The deaths of Caroline von Rantzau, 26, and Arno Koën, 44, have brought the Leeuwfontein hunting reserve, owned by the affluent shipping family of von Rantzau, under scrutiny. Authorities are now investigating a potential connection between the two fatalities.
Initial reports mistakenly indicated that von Rantzau had perished in a car accident on June 1, but it was later confirmed that both deaths were due to firearms. Koën was discovered shot with a 9mm pistol on May 31, and subsequent gunshots were reported on the property. Von Rantzau was later found with fatal injuries from a .357 caliber hunting rifle.
A witness mentioned to Bild that the firearm might have been taken from a gun cabinet belonging to her father, Dr. Eberhart Rantzau. The police conducted a thorough two-day search of the estate, interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, but no motive has been established yet, and no arrests have been made. Investigators are exploring various leads in the case.
The tragic events have deeply affected the von Rantzau family, known for their prominence in Germany’s shipping sector. Von Rantzau was seen as a rising figure in her family’s Hamburg-based business empire, managed by her father, which made significant investments in container infrastructure in South Africa.
Living in the country, she had recently expanded her property holdings with two additional residences near the Mozambique border. Known for her passion for animal care and hunting, von Rantzau was also close to Koën, whom she considered a “foster father” and “mentor.”
Malesela Ledwaba, a police spokesperson, highlighted the importance of post-mortem examinations in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the deaths. He emphasized that the autopsy results would be crucial in determining if further investigations against any individuals were warranted.
