Mysterious disappearance of deadly viruses in Australian lab sparks global health concerns

Date:

Hundreds of vials, including two containing hantavirus, disappeared from an Australian lab in 2024. Additionally, nearly 100 vials of the Hendra virus and 223 vials of lyssavirus were reported missing. The incident was initially suspected to be due to mishandling during a freezer transfer. Following a thorough investigation by the Ministry of Health, it was determined that the vials were likely destroyed rather than stolen or lost.

Concerns arose regarding the whereabouts of the viruses after an outbreak onboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, where three individuals lost their lives. Among the affected passengers were a 70-year-old Dutch man, his 69-year-old wife, and a German woman. Martin Anstee, a 56-year-old British ex-policeman, and two other passengers were flown to the Netherlands for specialized treatment, while another patient is receiving care in Zurich, Switzerland.

Testing on samples from the MV Hondius identified the Andes strain of hantavirus, the only known type capable of human-to-human transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) addressed fears of a potential pandemic following the outbreak on the ship, emphasizing that the hantavirus is distinct from the coronavirus and does not spread in the same manner.

Most hantavirus strains are not transmissible between humans. The WHO assured that preventive measures are being enforced to contain further spread, with significant efforts in place to prevent the situation from escalating.
