Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent allegations of vandalism causing damage to the reflecting pool in Washington, DC, have been refuted following the emergence of new evidence.
Trump, 80, expressed his frustration on social media platform Truth Social after the pool near the Lincoln Memorial turned green due to an algal bloom shortly after a $14 million renovation. The pool was dyed ‘American flag blue’ during the refurbishment, leading to the rapid growth of algae, which has been a recurring issue for several years.
As the paint on the pool’s bottom started peeling and floating to the surface, some tourists took pieces as souvenirs. Despite the situation, Trump blamed vandalism for the pool’s condition, criticizing the recent developments.
Efforts to address the algal growth included using hydrogen peroxide, which unfortunately caused the paint to peel off the concrete floor. National Park Service workers and contractors were observed attempting to combat the algae, with additional measures such as ozone nanobubbles and a swimming pool-type vacuum cleaner being utilized.
Away from the reflecting pool issue, Trump found himself embroiled in a dispute with former Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over claims that she repeatedly sought a photo opportunity with him at the G7 summit and criticized Italy’s cooperation during the Iran conflict. This disagreement escalated after Trump’s comments about Meloni, leading Italy’s foreign minister to cancel a scheduled trip to the U.S.
Despite the ongoing controversies, Trump remained adamant about the vandalism allegations concerning the reflecting pool, emphasizing the challenges faced in maintaining Washington, DC’s monuments and memorials.
