“New Quay Named Top UK Seaside Destination”

Date:

A charming coastal town, far away from the hustle and bustle that can be found in some of the popular coastal resorts across the country, has been named the top seaside destination in the UK. While many people may think of iconic spots like Brighton, Blackpool, or Scarborough when considering the UK coastline, a lesser-known gem has claimed the spotlight. New Quay in Ceredigion has been recognized as the premier seaside town in a comprehensive ranking of the UK’s coastal destinations.

Described as a vibrant yet unspoiled town, New Quay offers a mix of relaxation and activity without being overrun by tourists. The town’s main sandy bay is lined with Victorian terraced houses and is a hub for various water activities like kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding. For those seeking a more rugged beach experience, Traeth Gwyn Beach and Cei Bach Beach provide a wilder setting.

Situated in Cardigan Bay, New Quay is renowned for being home to the largest population of resident bottlenose dolphins in the UK, with sightings almost guaranteed during the summer months from the harbor wall. The bay holds Special Area of Conservation status, offering visitors the chance to encounter various marine wildlife on boat trips, including harbor porpoises, Atlantic grey seals, and seasonal visitors like giant sunfish and basking sharks.

New Quay boasts three distinct beaches catering to different preferences. Harbour Beach, a Blue Flag award-winning stretch, is ideal for families with its safe swimming zone. Traeth Gwyn and Cei Bach beaches offer additional options for sunbathing and relaxation.

The town also marks the midpoint of the Wales Coast Path, a trail that follows the entire Welsh coastline and provides picturesque hiking routes towards Aberaeron in the north and Aberporth in the south.

In the rankings, North Berwick in Scotland secured the second spot. The town is known for Bass Rock, a distinctive landmark hosting a large gannet colony, and its two sandy beaches, West Beach and East Beach, offering stunning views of the volcanic Law hill. North Berwick’s high street features independent shops, cozy cafes, and traditional pubs, while the nearby Tantallon Castle and easy access to Edinburgh make it a popular day trip destination from the capital.
