Nigel Farage became defensive when questioned about receiving a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire during a contentious TV interview.
The leader of Reform UK declined to address inquiries on BBC Breakfast regarding the undisclosed amount gifted by Christopher Harborne in 2024, just before announcing his candidacy in the upcoming general election. The parliamentary standards watchdog has initiated an investigation into his failure to declare the substantial gift from the wealthy individual based in Thailand. According to parliamentary regulations, newly elected Members of Parliament are required to disclose relevant gifts and contributions received within the previous 12 months.
In a recent interview, Farage suggested that the revelation of the gift was due to his phone being compromised by Russian hackers, though he has yet to provide any substantiating evidence for this claim. Despite maintaining a low profile in recent weeks, he resurfaced to conduct interviews commemorating the Brexit vote anniversary but appeared unsettled when pressed about the donation.
When questioned if the gift impacted his party’s performance in the Makerfield by-election, Farage dismissed the significance, stating that only the media cared about it. However, he acknowledged the parliamentary standards watchdog’s interest in the matter, alluding to a complaint lodged by the Conservative Party chairman, emphasizing his belief that his actions were above board.
Farage has offered varying explanations for the gift, initially suggesting it was for security expenses before later characterizing it as a token of appreciation for his pro-Brexit advocacy. He emphasized that the funds were an unconditional gift, allowing him full discretion on its use, citing his prolonged exposure to threats and attacks as justification for the financial support.
When pressed about his spending of the gift, Farage deemed it a private matter, drawing a comparison to the interviewer’s personal expenses. He expressed no remorse for not declaring the gift and asserted that voters would not be concerned about his financial holdings. In a separate interview, he described the £5 million as recognition for sacrificing a significant portion of his life and foregoing a lucrative career in London’s financial sector.
Regarding allegations of property acquisition following the gift reception, Farage refuted the claims, dismissing them as falsehoods and emphasizing the thorough scrutiny of the funds before any transactions were made.
