Nigel Farage faces mounting pressure to clarify whether he reported suspicions of Russian espionage targeting his communications to uncover a concealed £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency magnate. Initially, the Reform UK leader asserted that the controversial sum from businessman Christopher Harborne was intended for his personal protection, later suggesting it was a reward for his pro-Brexit campaigning efforts.
Following the disclosure of the donation, Reform UK alleged that a thorough investigation by counter-espionage specialists uncovered attempts by hostile foreign agents, likely associated with Moscow, to compromise Farage’s phone, email, and financial accounts. Labour Party Chair Anna Turley has demanded that Farage provide details on whether this security breach was reported to law enforcement or cybersecurity authorities. Failure to do so within 24 hours could prompt Labour to seek an independent investigation.
In a letter to Farage, Turley emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting its potential implications for national security, political integrity, and public trust in democracy. She stressed the importance of promptly sharing any evidence of foreign interference with appropriate authorities for a comprehensive and impartial inquiry.
Farage failed to declare the donation in the members’ interests register, having received it shortly before his election as an MP in 2024. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is now scrutinizing whether Farage violated disclosure regulations, while the Electoral Commission considers launching its inquiry. Harborne, a British entrepreneur residing in Thailand, contributed £12 million to Reform UK last year.
Responding to queries, a spokesperson for Reform asserted that the incident had been reported to relevant authorities without specifying the recipients. They refrained from further comments, citing ongoing investigations.
