A woman in Bangladesh has succumbed to Nipah virus, raising concerns about its potential as a significant health threat. Nipah, a deadly virus with a mortality rate of up to 75%, was first reported in India and has now spread to Bangladesh, prompting health alerts in the UK due to fears of wider transmission.
The victim, aged between 40 and 50, fell ill on January 21 in northern Bangladesh, showing typical Nipah symptoms such as headache, fever, muscle cramps, and loss of appetite. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to unconsciousness and eventual death on January 28.
Although the woman had no recent travel history, she was known to consume raw palm sap, a known source of Nipah virus transmission from bats. Health authorities monitored and tested all 35 individuals who had contact with her, confirming no additional cases.
The World Health Organization has stated a low risk of international spread of the virus, with neighboring countries like Thailand and Malaysia implementing screening measures at airports similar to those for Covid-19. UK health agencies have advised travelers to affected regions to be vigilant for symptoms and seek medical attention promptly if they suspect Nipah infection.
