North Korea conducted a ballistic missile launch in close proximity to Japan, as reported by South Korea. The missile, identified as a ballistic missile by the Japanese Ministry of Defence, was launched from the east coast of North Korea on Tuesday, according to South Korea’s Defense Ministry. Tensions between North and South Korea escalated following North Korea’s accusations of South Korea flying surveillance drones across the border. In response, South Korea denied operating drones during the alleged incidents and initiated an investigation to determine if civilians were responsible for the drone activities.
Recently, North Korea announced successful test flights of hypersonic missiles, with Kim Jong-un overseeing the launches to strengthen the nation’s nuclear war deterrent capability. The missile launch on Tuesday preceded North Korea’s upcoming ruling party congress, aimed at setting new political and economic agendas, marking the first congress of its kind in five years.
Earlier in the month, Kim Jong-un removed a vice premier due to issues in a factory modernization scheme, signaling efforts to enhance discipline among officials and drive better outcomes ahead of the significant political assembly. The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong-un criticized the vice premier, Yang Sung-ho, for causing disruptions in the modernization of the Ryongsong Machine Complex, resulting in economic losses. Kim Jong-un emphasized the necessity of responsible personnel appointments to prevent such mistakes in the future.
