A high-rise building in New York City is unstable following a partial collapse, according to officials. The incident occurred in Manhattan, prompting fire crews to respond to the 37-story skyscraper after two supporting pillars buckled, leading to the collapse of five stories. Bricks fell around the area, resulting in an evacuation.
An eyewitness, Cliff Johnson, who was inside the building during the collapse, described how the beams and floors crumbled, expressing concerns about the construction practices. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) confirmed structural issues on the 21st floor of the building being converted from a commercial to a residential property.
Chief of Department John Esposito highlighted the seriousness of the situation, with steel beams starting to bend under the weight, leading to evacuations of the building and nearby structures. Mayor Zohran Mamdani characterized the situation as ‘serious,’ emphasizing the ongoing assessments of the structure.
Stabilization efforts will commence once the building is deemed safe, as advised by the Mayor and FDNY. Residents have been urged to avoid the area to facilitate the emergency response. The incident caused disruptions during rush hours, impacting commutes, but fortunately, no injuries have been reported from the incident.
