Ofcom has initiated a formal probe into Elon Musk’s X regarding the creation of sexualized deepfake images through its AI chatbot tool. The UK media regulator aims to determine if the social media platform has violated its obligations under the Online Safety Act. Penalties, including fines of up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue, could be imposed if non-compliance is found.
Additionally, Ofcom has the authority to implement business disruption measures, like requiring payment providers or advertising services to cease association with the platform. The investigation has been prioritized by Ofcom and is expected to proceed swiftly.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has praised the investigation and urged Ofcom to swiftly conclude it. She plans to provide an update on the government’s response to Members of Parliament later today. Ms. Kendall emphasized the importance of a prompt investigation due to the disturbing content generated by Grok, stressing the need to address the concerns of the public and victims.
Ofcom recently raised concerns about Musk’s X and its AI tool, Grok, being used to produce sexualized images, particularly of children. The regulator highlighted the platform’s responsibility to safeguard UK users from illegal content, especially when it poses risks to children.
Amid increasing alarm over inappropriate deepfakes on Musk’s X, Business Secretary Peter Kyle indicated that the UK would take action to enhance online safety. He acknowledged the existing Online Safety Act but acknowledged the need for further measures to protect users, particularly on platforms like X.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy mentioned that US Vice President JD Vance showed support for addressing the issue of deepfake images. However, a comparison was drawn between the UK’s actions and restrictions in Russia by a free speech advocate associated with Donald Trump.
As discussions continue, efforts are being made to combat the circulation of harmful content online. Authorities are actively investigating breaches and implementing measures to ensure the safety of internet users, particularly vulnerable individuals.
