Four individuals, including two teenagers and an infant, have been saved from a rapidly spreading house fire by an off-duty RCMP officer who swiftly responded to the emergency and assisted a desperate man in extracting his family through a basement window.
Constable Anton Lorde, returning home after his shift on July 18, noticed a dense plume of smoke in the sky, leading him to Mount Pleasant Street in Sydney, N.S. Upon arrival, he encountered a house engulfed in flames, emanating from various parts of the structure. Initially assuming the house was vacant due to multiple onlookers, he quickly cleared the street for firefighting vehicles.
Upon inquiring about the occupants from a neighbor, Lorde discovered there were many residents, including children. Prompted by this information, he proceeded to the backyard, where he began knocking on windows, urging anyone inside to evacuate. Through a window, he made eye contact with a frightened boy, encouraging him to exit the building.
As the situation intensified, the father of the children emerged, and a collaborative effort ensued. The father, identified as Peter Magliaro, narrated his harrowing experience of rushing home upon learning of the fire, braving intense heat to rescue his loved ones, emphasizing his primary concern for the children’s safety.
With assistance from Lorde, who acted decisively by breaking a window to facilitate the rescue, Magliaro successfully evacuated his family, including a four-month-old baby. Grateful for the collective effort that saved lives, Lorde humbly acknowledged the contributions of others at the scene and emphasized the unity displayed during the rescue operation.
Authorities swiftly responded to the fire, with fire crews arriving within minutes. The fire marshal’s office initiated an investigation into the incident, joined by the Cape Breton Regional Police. Magliaro, attributing the fire to deliberate actions, has offered a reward for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible.
Despite the challenges posed by the fire, the family’s pets were rescued, and Magliaro and his family have found temporary accommodation while contemplating rebuilding their home, which was uninsured. Expressing gratitude for the support received, Magliaro remains resolute in rebuilding their lives in the community they have called home for over three decades.
