An Academy Award winner faced a setback when trying to bring his Oscar statuette on a flight due to security concerns. Pavel Talankin, the recipient of the Oscar for his documentary ‘Mr Nobody Against Putin,’ was instructed to check in his award at a New York airport. This incident occurred as airport security deemed the golden statuette a potential weapon.
Talankin, accompanied by his colleague for translation assistance, encountered difficulties with TSA officials at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Despite having previously traveled with his Oscar without issues, this time he was halted from carrying it on the plane for his journey to Germany. The award was placed in a cardboard box to be checked in the hold, but upon arrival in Germany, the Oscar was missing.
Expressing disappointment, Talankin’s co-director, David Borenstein, shared on Instagram the ordeal they faced at the airport. He questioned the treatment, highlighting the rarity of such an incident and speculating on potential biases towards a lesser-known filmmaker.
Lufthansa airlines, who assisted in packaging the award, assured a thorough search effort to locate and return the missing Oscar. The airline expressed regret over the situation and emphasized the urgency in resolving the matter promptly.
The missing Academy Award, standing at 13.5 inches tall and weighing 8.5 pounds, carries significant sentimental and monetary value. Talankin’s documentary sheds light on the harsh realities of war propaganda in Russian schools, a subject that led to his exile from Russia for his own safety. Despite facing challenges, Talankin remains dedicated to his craft, aiming to reach and impact audiences with his powerful storytelling.
