Various MPs from different political parties expressed astonishment at the permissibility of such practices and urged the government to prohibit secondary employment for MPs, except in exceptional cases. During a parliamentary debate, it was highlighted that Mr. Farage had disclosed 16 external sources of income since his election in July 2024, amounting to 140 days of paid work, despite his absence during the discussion.
Labour’s Richard Burgon, advocating for a ban on second jobs, emphasized that being an MP is a well-compensated responsibility, placing MPs among the top 5% of earners in the country.
