Outrage Grows as Waitrose Fires Employee for Stopping Shoplifter

Date:

Waitrose customers are expressing their strong disapproval after the supermarket terminated the employment of a dedicated staff member who intervened to stop a shoplifter. The dismissal of Walker Smith, a 54-year-old employee with 17 years of service at Waitrose, has sparked outrage on social media, with many loyal customers declaring they will no longer patronize the store.

In response to the backlash, Waitrose, which operates over 300 branches across the UK, emphasized that confronting shoplifters poses a significant risk to personal safety and is not part of the company’s policy. Despite the explanation, customers remain unsatisfied, with some stating their decision to cease shopping at Waitrose.

The incident unfolded when Mr. Smith attempted to detain a known repeat shoplifter at the store in Clapham Junction, southwest London. Following a confrontation where Mr. Smith unintentionally threw a piece of chocolate in frustration, his actions were reported to his superiors, leading to his dismissal despite his pleas to keep his job.

Waitrose reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees and customers, highlighting past incidents where staff members were injured while confronting shoplifters. The supermarket underscored the importance of following established safety protocols and emphasized that risking lives over theft prevention is not warranted.

While acknowledging the concerns raised by customers, Waitrose stated that the situation is subject to a standard appeals process and affirmed its advocacy for enhanced protection of retail workers against criminal activities.
