“Over 100,000 Arrive in UK by Small Boat Despite New Law”

Date:

More than 100,000 individuals have arrived in the UK by small boat since the implementation of Suella Braverman’s key legislation to halt Channel crossings, according to recent data.

Suella Braverman, a former Home Secretary and current prominent member of Nigel Farage’s team, introduced the Illegal Migration Act in 2023 with the aim of curbing boat arrivals, but recent statistics revealed that the number of arrivals has surpassed 100,000 since the law was enacted.

Following the royal assent of the legislation on July 20, 2023, a total of 100,673 people have successfully made the perilous journey across the Channel to reach the UK. This figure represents over half of the 200,000 individuals who have arrived in the UK by small boat since 2018. The enactment of the Illegal Migration Act came after the failure of Priti Patel’s Nationalities and Borders Act to address the issue of Channel crossings.

Labour MP Luke Charters criticized Suella Braverman, stating that her tenure as Tory Home Secretary was marked by performative cruelty and overall ineffectiveness. He highlighted the paradox of right-wing parties escalating rhetoric on the matter despite their historical responsibility for the issue, suggesting a preference for assigning blame over finding solutions.

Additionally, a Labour source pointed out the challenges faced by former Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman in addressing small boat arrivals. The source emphasized the failures of their governance, contrasting it with the current Home Secretary’s efforts to tackle the issue, noting the lack of apology from Jenrick and Braverman.

When introducing the Illegal Migration Bill to Parliament in March 2023, Suella Braverman emphasized the government’s commitment to deterring illegal entry into the country. The legislation, which prohibited individuals arriving by small boat after March 7, 2023, from seeking asylum in the UK, led to a decline in Home Office decision-making as many individuals remained in accommodations.

Between March 7 and the general election on July 4 the following year, a total of 39,861 people arrived in the UK by small boat, with 28,649 arrivals occurring after the passage of Mrs. Braverman’s act. Jo White, chair of Labour’s Red Wall Caucus, highlighted the challenges inherited by Labour in managing the situation and outlined the progress made in returning individuals and disrupting smuggling networks.

Following the general election, former Home Secretary Yvette Cooper lifted the ban on small boat arrivals seeking asylum, citing the build-up of a backlog. The Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Act passed by Labour in December aimed to repeal sections of Mrs. Braverman’s legislation.

Current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood warned of potential dismantling of the asylum system by Reform if small boat crossings are not addressed. She proposed measures to deter crossings, including regular reviews of refugee status and expedited removal of families with rejected asylum claims. A new agreement with France involving increased policing and a detention center in Dunkirk aims to prevent further crossings.

Efforts to address the issue of small boat arrivals continue, with contrasting approaches from different political factions. Reform UK emphasizes detention and deportation of illegal migrants, while Labour focuses on safe routes and legal pathways for asylum seekers. The ongoing debate underscores the importance of finding sustainable solutions to the complex challenges posed by irregular migration.
