Have you ever fantasized about owning your personal secluded island? A place where you can break away from the daily grind, savor the sound of gentle waves caressing the shore, take leisurely walks along sandy coastlines at dusk, and immerse yourself in unspoiled natural beauty. Well, your dream could become a reality.
An exceptional opportunity has emerged as Visit Sweden is offering five of their private islands to UK travelers for a full year. This means you could have exclusive access to your very own island, away from the crowds and tourist destinations, for 365 days as an ‘Island Custodian’.
Sweden, known for its vast array of over 267,000 islands set amidst tranquil surroundings, could grant you ownership of one. Among the Scandinavian nation’s offerings are five pristine and unspoiled islands, and all you need to do is submit a video explaining why you are deserving of your very own Swedish island.
However, there’s a condition for those interested in this opportunity – you will have to manage and care for the island during your custodianship. This responsibility entails looking after the secluded haven while you revel in the scenic views and bask in the summer sunshine.
Susanne Andersson, CEO at Visit Sweden, voiced, “Sweden boasts the most islands of any country globally, and we want to offer people the chance to experience perhaps the purest form of luxury: the serenity and beauty of nature on their own island.”
This enticing initiative, a collaboration between Visit Sweden and the National Property Board managing state-owned cultural heritage properties, presents five “beautifully secluded” islands. These islands are located near essential amenities in local communities, ensuring that you have all you need for this unique escape.
Providing details on the available options, Visit Sweden highlighted:
One of the islands on offer is Medbadan, described by Visit Sweden as having been “formed during the last ice age,” offering visitors the chance to experience “brackish water, swimming, or gentle paddling among the skerries.” Storberget, another remote island available, shaped by the open sea, is nicknamed “The big mountain.”
Additionally, Tjuvholmen is a woodland island with “lighter patches of birch and alder near the water,” providing a peaceful retreat where you can listen to seabirds. Marsten is perfect for fishing enthusiasts with its clear waters, while nearby Skrea strand offers a livelier beach setting.
Susanne further mentioned, “If you miss out on these islands, fret not. Sweden has numerous others accessible to everyone. From serene lakes to expansive coastlines, there’s an island paradise awaiting all.”
