Prince Edward Island has implemented a new Heat Alert Response System to notify residents about potentially hazardous summer heat conditions, a measure long awaited according to the province’s chief public health officer as warm, humid days become more frequent. Dr. Heather Morrison mentioned that the system, officially launched in late June, has been activated twice this summer, including the ongoing week.
A heat warning is currently in place throughout P.E.I. until Friday, with conditions anticipated to improve by Saturday. With the humidex, temperatures may feel as high as 38 C. Morrison noted that P.E.I. was among the last provinces to introduce a heat alert response system, emphasizing that the misconception of immunity to intense heat on the island is unfounded.
The system follows a staged approach based on temperature and humidity levels. Morrison explained that a yellow heat warning is declared when daytime highs reach 28 C or higher, nighttime lows remain at 18 C or warmer, or when humidex values are expected to exceed 36 for two or more days consecutively.
An orange heat warning, indicating more severe heat conditions, is triggered when daytime highs hit 31 C and nighttime lows are at or above 18 C for two consecutive days within a heat event lasting three days or longer. Morrison highlighted that this system is designed not only to alert the public but also to foster public health and community action in response to heat-related risks.
Morrison emphasized the importance of a localized tool for P.E.I., stating that relying solely on national weather notifications may not suffice. The province’s unique characteristics and responsibility towards both residents and tourists underscore the necessity for a tailored approach to heat alerts. Efforts have been made to collaborate with various communities across P.E.I. to identify accessible cooling options during heat events, including facilities like libraries, malls, and care centers with adequate ventilation.
The alert system is complemented by enhanced surveillance efforts to monitor heat-related illnesses on the island effectively. Symptoms of heat-related illnesses were outlined, and specific precautions were recommended for Islanders to stay safe during heat warnings, including staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, and avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
Morrison stressed that the effectiveness of any heat warning relies on people receiving, understanding, and taking action based on the alerts, while also encouraging individuals to check on those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related risks.
