“Parents Upset as School Reorganizes, Kids Resist Attendance”

Date:

Worried parents have reported that children are resisting attending school due to sudden class reorganization at Townfield Primary School in Prenton, causing distress among pupils. The school is transitioning from single-year to mixed Year 5 and 6 groups in response to declining birth rates.

These changes, aimed at aligning with other schools facing similar challenges, were communicated directly to the children before informing parents, leading to emotional scenes as some students were separated from their friends unexpectedly. The Rainbow Education Trust, overseeing the school, admitted that the communication strategy for these modifications did not go smoothly, resulting in heightened tensions within the school community.

A father, upset by his child’s reaction to the news, confronted the school’s headteacher, prompting a brief lockdown and police intervention. Subsequently, the father apologized but was banned from the school premises for six months. Despite efforts to address concerns, additional parents expressed ongoing distress about the situation, with some children refusing to attend school due to the upheaval caused by the reorganization.

Parents criticized the school’s poor communication and lack of preparation for the changes, emphasizing the impact on children entering their crucial final year of primary school. With emotions running high, families demanded better communication and support for the affected students.

Gina Donaldson, CEO of Rainbow Multi-Academy Trust, defended the decision to combine year groups, citing national trends and the success of similar models in other schools. Acknowledging the flawed communication process, Donaldson assured parents of ongoing dialogue to address concerns and improve parental engagement.

Despite ongoing frustrations, some parents have welcomed the change positively, appreciating increased parental involvement. School attendance has remained high at around 98%, surpassing national averages, indicating some level of acceptance and adjustment to the new arrangements.
