Paul Gascoigne recently shared his ongoing struggle with bulimia, which began when he was just 17 years old. Despite facing numerous injuries throughout his career, Gascoigne has been determined to maintain his fitness. His most recent injury occurred during a fishing trip earlier this year, resulting in a broken left knee cap that required him to wear a brace.
In a recent interview promoting his new book ‘Eight’, Gascoigne recalled his early attempts to stay slim during his time at Newcastle. He mentioned his past struggles with bulimia and expressed his desire to stay in shape as a former footballer. Gascoigne has undergone a total of 38 operations to rebuild his body, with one of the most severe injuries being a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee during the 1991 FA Cup final.
Despite facing setbacks due to alcoholism, including a near-death experience during a rehab session in 2013, Gascoigne admitted in a recent interview that giving up drinking may be a challenge for him. His injuries have been varied, including a recent incident where he injured his shoulder while attempting to collect a coconut from a palm tree during the Italian version of ‘I’m a Celebrity’.
Gascoigne humorously shared a past injury story from his time at Tottenham, where he suffered a hernia that left him with enlarged testicles, comparing them to a character from a comic. His book ‘Eight’ is set to be released on October 23, offering a deeper insight into his life and experiences.
Throughout his career, Gascoigne has faced several major injuries, including a career-altering ACL tear in the 1991 FA Cup final, further knee damage in 1991, ongoing injury struggles during his time at Lazio in 1992, a double fracture of his right leg in 1994, a major knee ligament setback in 1998, a car accident in 2004, and emergency surgery for a stomach ulcer in 2007.
