A pensioner became enraged and brandished a firearm at a group of women and girls after they laughed when their dog made a mess on the grass near his home. Brian Hoyle, a former skilled marksman, shouted at them for not cleaning up after their dog before firing the gun, causing shock among the group. The incident took place in Hull, where Hoyle admitted to possessing the firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
According to the prosecution, the women and girls, accompanied by a dog, were passing by Hoyle’s house when the dog fouled near his property, leading to laughter from the group. Hoyle confronted them, holding a silver object, and questioned why they allowed the dog to soil his lawn. The group, after cleaning up the mess, heard what they believed to be a bullet hitting a nearby garage shutter.
Despite Hoyle’s claim that he was only degassing the air pistol and not firing it, the women felt shocked and quickly left the scene after hearing the sound again. Police later found two weapons at Hoyle’s residence, leading to his admission of guilt, although he later dismissed his actions as fueled by alcohol.
One of the victims expressed anxiety following the incident, while another noted a positive change in Hoyle’s behavior post-arrest. Hoyle, with no prior convictions, received a nine-month suspended prison sentence and a five-year restraining order. His lawyer emphasized his past as a skilled marksman and his regret for the incident, attributing it to previous antisocial behavior involving dogs on his property.
