“Pimping Websites Exploit Women Online, Urgent Call for Action”

Date:

Thousands of women are enduring appalling violence and exploitation in plain view after being marketed for sexual purposes online, likened to being “sold like pizzas.”

A distressing report highlighted that websites facilitating sex-for-sale, known as ‘pimping websites,’ are facilitating widespread abuse. The investigation by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC) revealed that many women are being advertised without their consent, enabling criminals to profit from their suffering.

Ministers have been called upon to contemplate the prohibition of these platforms, which are currently functioning within the bounds of the law. A survivor shared her harrowing experience with the commissioner, expressing concerns about her safety and the dehumanizing nature of being treated as a commodity.

The report also discovered that minors can engage with sellers without age verification, leading to access to explicit content. Commissioner Eleanor Lyons emphasized the failure of the system in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and preventing criminal exploitation through these platforms.

The document disclosed that customers can anonymously purchase sexual services, with organized crime exploiting multiple women simultaneously. A comprehensive analysis of nearly 63,000 advertisements on 12 websites revealed that a significant portion displayed indicators of trafficking or exploitation, signaling a dire situation.

Survivors lamented the ineffectiveness of safety measures on adult services websites, recounting instances of receiving threats and harassment from buyers. Advocates emphasized the urgency of banning these sites to prevent further harm and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Efforts to combat the online sex trade have gained momentum, with safeguarding minister Jess Phillips issuing stern warnings to entities involved in facilitating sexual exploitation. Calls for legislative measures to address these issues have been echoed by numerous lawmakers, urging decisive action to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
