Pioneering Jockey Rachael Blackmore Expecting First Child

Date:

Retired racing icon Rachael Blackmore has revealed that she is pregnant with her first child alongside fellow jockey Brian Hayes. The pair exchanged vows in a private ceremony in West Cork on January 5, following a decade-long friendship.

Breaking the news on her Instagram story, Rachael shared a photo of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot, playfully commenting on the change in contents. The 36-year-old retired from professional horse racing last year after a remarkable career that included groundbreaking achievements such as being the first woman to win the Grand National and earning the title of leading jockey at Cheltenham.

Originally from Tipperary, Rachael amassed a remarkable 575 wins during her time as a professional rider. Her retirement in May 2021 came after a standout performance with Minella Times at Aintree.

Notable for her triumphs at the Cheltenham Festival, Rachael secured 18 victories in 2021, including notable wins in the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Her exceptional achievements led to her being honored with the World Sports Star award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Having been close friends for more than ten years, Rachael and Brian first crossed paths at a stable in Co Carlow during the early stages of their careers. Despite both being jockeys, their home life rarely revolves around horse racing discussions. Rachael has credited Brian for his significant impact on her career, stating his importance surpasses her ability to express gratitude.

The couple has been seen together at various events, including Wimbledon, music festivals, and vacations. Brian, aged 34, boasts a 17-year career with one Cheltenham Festival win and has ridden for renowned figures like Willie Mullins.
