“Poisoned in Prison: UK Holds Russia Accountable”

Date:

Two years ago, in Munich, Yulia Navalny sadly announced the passing of her husband, Alexei Navalny, allegedly at the hands of the Russian government. Today, we have uncovered disturbing details surrounding his demise in a Russian prison. Lab tests have revealed the presence of a lethal toxin, epibatidine, typically found in Ecuador dart frogs, in Alexei Navalny’s body, likely contributing to his death.

The Russian state had the means, motive, and opportunity to utilize this deadly substance against Navalny while he was incarcerated. Alongside other nations investigating the matter, we hold Russia accountable for his untimely death.

This incident is just one part of a broader trend of harmful activities that pose a growing threat to European security and extend to British territories. From launching missiles on innocent civilians in Ukraine to spreading hybrid threats across Europe and beyond, Russia’s aggression is evident.

Following the Cold War, there was an expectation of peaceful cooperation between the UK and Russia. However, those aspirations have faded, and we must now prepare to confront Russian aggression, encompassing hybrid threats, cyber assaults, disinformation campaigns, and attempts to undermine democratic processes.

The UK is taking a firm stance against Russia’s unacceptable behavior. Through prosecutions under the National Security Act, we have exposed and discouraged Russian-affiliated entities. Sanctions have been imposed on the GRU, Russia’s foreign military intelligence agency, reducing Russia’s intelligence presence in Europe. Efforts are being made to disrupt Russia’s financial support for the war in Ukraine, including tightening control over Russia’s shadow fleet vessels.

Our strength lies in unity, and our international partnerships, including within NATO, enhance our resilience. At the Munich Security Conference, collaborative efforts with allies are being coordinated to address shared concerns, aligning with the Prime Minister’s outlined strategy. While Russia aims to sow division, its actions only reinforce our determination.

Yvette Cooper, the UK’s Foreign Secretary and longstanding Labour MP, has been actively involved in various key governmental roles. Leading the charge as Foreign Secretary since September 2025, Cooper previously held the position of Home Secretary from July 2024. Representing Pontefract, Castleford, and Knottingley as an MP since 2024, her commitment to national security and foreign affairs is unwavering.
