“Police Granted New Powers to Dispose of Nuisance Vehicles”

Date:

Police have been granted new powers to dispose of nuisance vehicles within just seven days, as announced this week. The legislation, set to be presented to MPs, targets cars and e-scooters seized due to anti-social behavior (ASB). This move aims to prevent hooligans from reclaiming the vehicles promptly and engaging in further offending activities.

The Home Office states that these measures will combat disruptive gatherings like unauthorized car meets, where drivers disturb neighborhoods with noisy engines and loud music late at night. Policing minister Sarah Jones emphasized the need for these powers to address the prevalent issues caused by off-road bikes, e-scooters on pavements, and illegal car meets across the nation.

Under the current regulations, law enforcement must wait for 14 days before disposing of seized vehicles. Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at The AA, praised the government for empowering police to tackle dangerous and anti-social vehicle use that disrupts communities, urging individuals to reconsider their actions before causing disturbances.

Rebecca Bryant, chief executive of ASB awareness charity Resolve, highlighted the detrimental impact of vehicle-related ASB on communities, emphasizing the importance of swift and effective responses from law enforcement. The new powers are seen as a positive step in addressing vehicle-related anti-social behavior quickly and decisively.

The timing of these measures coincides with ASB awareness week, serving as a preemptive warning to potential offenders as the summer approaches. Minister Jones reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all communities by actively tackling anti-social behavior.
