A disturbing incident unfolded as two human heads were discovered on the side of the road near a bank, prompting a police investigation.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene in Culiacan, Sinaloa after the initial head was located within a black box on the outskirts of the Mexican town of Tepuche, near a branch of the Bienestar bank.
The investigation continued the following morning, leading to the discovery of a second head just a few meters away from the initial find. Both heads have been removed for forensic analysis. Reports from local media suggest that one of the victims, a 23-year-old who had been reported missing, is among the deceased. The other victim is believed to also be from the same town.
The recent surge in violence in Mexico follows the demise of El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, after a military operation last month.
El Mencho, a prominent cartel figure in Mexico and a top target for US authorities, met his end during a raid in Jalisco state, marking a significant blow to the cartels since the capture of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman of the Sinaloa Cartel a decade ago.
Mexico’s defense secretary Ricardo Trevilla shared that the operation to capture El Mencho involved a coordinated effort by the army, national guard, Mexican air force, and special forces. Information obtained regarding El Mencho’s whereabouts through one of his associates led to the operation.
During the operation, federal forces faced resistance from the cartel, resulting in the death of eight members. El Mencho and two of his associates sustained injuries and succumbed while being airlifted to Mexico City. Additionally, authorities seized rocket launchers capable of targeting aircraft and armored vehicles at the scene.
Omar García Harfuch, the security secretary under Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, emphasized Mexico’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking with a “zero impunity” stance. Donald Trump has warned of potential tariffs if Mexico does not take significant steps to curb drug flow into the US.
Mike Vigil, a former DEA official, praised Mexico for its aggressive stance against cartels, attributing the success of the operation against El Mencho to the Mexican armed forces.
