Prince Andrew faces further backlash as York takes steps to distance itself from him. The former Duke of York was stripped of his titles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein, leading to public outrage. York Minster, a historic cathedral, is considering removing a dedication stone laid by Prince Andrew in 1998. However, the process is complex due to the cathedral’s protected status. Locals have long called for the removal of the stone, with some suggesting it should be discarded.
York Minster officials are working with partners to review the inscription stone, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the cathedral’s integrity. Additionally, a plaque commemorating Prince Andrew’s opening of the Millennium Bridge in 2001 is also slated for change. This movement to erase ties to Prince Andrew extends to Canada, where a township plans to rename Prince Andrew Island in response to his controversial actions.
The island, located in Selwyn Township, was named after Prince Andrew due to his brief schooling stint in the area. Mayor Sherry Senis confirmed that the council is exploring the renaming process for both Prince Andrew Island and Gordounstoun Island. Separately, Prince Andrew’s banners, plaques, and names have been removed from various locations, including St George’s Chapel and the Falkland Islands, reflecting a wider trend of disassociation from the disgraced royal.
