Prince William humorously expressed his willingness to switch from his current designer beard to a mustache in solidarity with soldiers showcasing trendy facial hair. During a visit to the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment in Bulford, Wiltshire, the Prince of Wales, who had grown his own beard in the summer of 2024, admired the soldiers’ moustaches. He playfully mentioned, “I might end up taking mine off and leaving a tash,” while stroking his beard.
Informed by Lt Jack Austin, 26, that the facial hair trend began when 1 Mercian was stationed in Estonia last year, Prince William acknowledged that the style was gaining popularity. The British Army modified its regulations in March 2024 to permit well-maintained facial hair for soldiers.
During his Bulford visit, the Prince witnessed the latest training methods, including a drone-assisted exercise for building clearance, and engaged with military families. One 63-year-old mother, Maxine Debonnaire, entertained the future King by jokingly mentioning that her son had been on numerous dates since returning from Estonia. William, sharing a light moment with her, remarked, “I think we’ll get on very well,” as Lt Harris Debonnaire, 26, confirmed taking her out for Mother’s Day.
Joining B Company’s officers, soldiers, and families in the Officers’ Mess, the Prince learned about their recent deployment to Estonia on Operation Cabrit, the UK’s contribution to NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Estonia and Poland. He commended the dedication of service families and reminisced about the cold weather during his visit to Estonia in March 2025.
Interacting with various families, including children, Prince William entertained them by inquiring about the available treats like a “very big chocolate cake and cookies.” He also engaged with the female network to discuss women in the Army’s progress and challenges, reflecting his role as the Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment.
Donning ear defenders, the Prince observed an exercise at the urban training facility, where soldiers practiced clearing a makeshift building while drones provided aerial support. Impressed by the operation’s creativity and skill development, he inquired about the participants’ morale, satisfaction with their service, and offered assistance.
Additionally, Prince William awarded three Long Service and Good Conduct medals to soldiers and posed for a photograph with families.
