Princess Diana enthusiasts have criticized allegations portraying the late royal as aloof and unapproachable, especially around photographers. Juan Carlos I, the former monarch of Spain from 1975 to 2014, has targeted Princess Diana in his upcoming memoir, “Reconciliation,” where he refutes any romantic involvement with her and describes her as reserved and distant except in the presence of paparazzi.
Following the book’s revelations, fans of Princess Diana have come forward in defense of her. One online commenter expressed disgust, stating, “This is distasteful… This is not fair.” Another remarked, “It lacks dignity entirely.” Another supporter argued against Juan Carlos attacking someone who is no longer alive, emphasizing that the deceased cannot respond. A different fan asserted, “Your opinions hold no value. Princess Diana always displayed greater character than you.”
During the 1980s, Diana visited the Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca, the Spanish royal family’s summer residence, on four occasions with Prince Charles, William, and Harry, during the early years of Juan Carlos’ reign after Francisco Franco’s death.
Juan Carlos I, aged 87, has been married to Queen Sofia of Greece and Denmark since 1962 and refuted any claims of a romantic relationship with Diana in his memoirs. Diana was rumored to have been involved in several affairs, including with her bodyguard, Barry Mannakee, in the 1980s.
Criticism arose from fans once again regarding the accusations made by Juan Carlos I about Diana’s alleged affairs. One social media user questioned the timing, asking why these statements are being made 28 years after Princess Diana’s passing. Another commenter emphasized the importance of not speaking ill of the deceased. A different opinion echoed, “Since Diana cannot refute these claims from beyond the grave, why bring them up now?”
In a recorded conversation, Diana reportedly expressed her feelings towards Mr. Mannakee, saying, “I only felt happy in his presence. I acted like a child seeking approval from him all the time, desperate for praise.” In 1986, Mannakee was reassigned to the Diplomatic Protection Squad due to concerns about his relationship with Diana being deemed inappropriate.
