The Princess of Wales impressed with a stunning tiara at a grand state banquet alongside the King, hosting dignitaries from Nigeria. She was adorned in the Lover’s Knot Tiara, a beautiful emerald gown designed by Andrew Gn, and earrings from the late Queen Elizabeth II’s collection. Accompanied by Prince William and Prince Edward, they graced the event at St George’s Hall, with Kate elegantly dressed in a high-necked gown matching Nigeria’s flag colors.
President Tinubu’s visit marks a significant occasion, being the first incoming state visit by a Muslim leader during the holy month of Ramadan in almost a century. Due to Ramadan fasting practices, there was no traditional lunch with the King during the day. Instead, it is reported that the Nigerian president privately broke his fast before joining the Royal Family at St George’s Hall for the banquet.
The first lady, Remi, a Christian and ordained Pentecostal pastor, will depart with the President as Eid-al-Fitr, the Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, commences the following evening. The grand banquet was attended by nine royal family members and distinguished guests, including notable Nigerian and British-Nigerian personalities.
A total of 160 guests enjoyed a lavish banquet, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer seated next to rugby star Maro Itoje. Adaptations were made to the banquet service to accommodate Muslim guests observing Ramadan. Canapes were served before the dinner to provide sustenance for those fasting, and a prayer room was arranged for guests breaking their fast.
The menu featured fish dishes, including fillet of turbot and lobster mousse, in consideration of dietary preferences during Ramadan. The dessert was an iced blackcurrant souffle, and the after-dinner cocktail was a unique twist on the Nigerian drink, the Chapman. The historic visit also signifies the King’s first spring banquet at Windsor Castle, with the venue adorned with vibrant spring flowers from royal gardens.
Kate’s presence at the banquet followed her earlier diplomatic attire when welcoming guests at their Windsor hotel. She wore a grey coat dress by British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, complemented by a Jane Taylor hat and Princess Diana’s earrings. The Nigerian leader and his wife were warmly greeted by Charles and Camilla, symbolizing the strengthening of UK-Africa business ties.
The royal event coincides with the announcement of new job opportunities in the UK as Nigerian companies expand operations. Notably, the visit follows recent controversies within the monarchy, including the arrest of the King’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The grand occasion celebrates diplomatic relations and showcases the UK as a global business hub for Africa.
