Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party is embroiled in a controversy regarding racism following a social media post by a local election candidate that criticized a well-known party supporter.
Arron Banks, a significant backer of Reform and a key figure in the Brexit campaign, received backlash for his comment “Welsh lad?” in response to a video featuring a Black activist supporting Plaid Cymru. James Evans, a Reform candidate, publicly denounced Banks’ remark as racist, stating that such comments are unacceptable.
Banks defended his statement as a joke, accusing Plaid Cymru of lacking humor and being anti-English. However, this explanation was strongly criticized by Plaid Cymru’s Liz Saville Roberts, who emphasized that racism is not a matter to be taken lightly.
The incident has cast a shadow over Reform’s campaign in Wales, where they are in a tight race with Plaid Cymru to dominate the upcoming Welsh parliament. The outcome is expected to shake up the political landscape, potentially pushing Labour into a third-place position after their long-standing governance in Wales.
Despite Nigel Farage calling for Banks to apologize for his remarks, he downplayed the situation, attributing it to Banks’ behavior after consuming alcohol. Banks, a former UKIP donor and Reform candidate, has not responded to the call for an apology.
Reform’s leader in Wales, Dan Thomas, avoided directly addressing Banks’ post during a recent TV debate, highlighting his Welsh identity amidst criticisms from Plaid Cymru supporters. The issue has sparked varying reactions from political parties in Wales, with calls for accountability and condemnation of racism.
Reform UK declined to provide a comment on the matter, while other parties, including Welsh Labour, the Welsh Conservatives, and the Wales Green Party, expressed their disapproval of the incident, affirming a zero-tolerance policy towards racism in society.
