Rail passengers may face changes in compensation rules as the government reportedly considers new proposals. Under the potential changes, travelers would only be eligible for compensation if their train journey is delayed by more than 30 minutes. This would replace the current system where passengers can receive refunds ranging from 25% to 100% of their ticket price based on the length of the delay.
The plans, as reported by The Times, are part of a move to introduce a unified compensation system to replace existing “delay repay” schemes. With ongoing nationalization of UK rail companies, all major operators are expected to come under public ownership by October 2027. Once nationalized, taxpayer funds will cover the cost of compensation instead of private operators.
In the 2023-24 financial year, around £138 million was paid out to rail passengers. The Department for Transport spokesperson emphasized the government’s focus on railway reforms to improve punctuality and simplify ticketing processes. Trainline has highlighted that passengers are missing out on over £80 million annually in compensation for delayed journeys. The company has launched a petition urging the government to enable easier online claims through a “one-click” process for all ticket buyers.
Trainline’s CEO, Jody Ford, stressed the importance of streamlining compensation procedures to align with advancements in ticket purchasing. The aim is to make claiming compensation as effortless as buying tickets online. This push for a practical change in the industry reflects passengers’ desire for rail reform that addresses their core concerns.
