The remnants of a plane bound for New York that infamously crashed in 1952, claiming the lives of 52 individuals, have been located 74 years after the tragic event.
The incident involved a Pan American Airways aircraft that departed from Puerto Rico on Good Friday. Its intended destination was what is now known as JFK International Airport in New York City.
The plane, identified as the Clipper Endeavour, was carrying 64 passengers and five crew members. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft, similar in size to a modern Boeing 737, experienced a loss of both engines on the right side.
The pilots executed a forceful water landing in the Atlantic Ocean, initially resulting in all occupants surviving. During that period, pre-flight safety briefings were not customary, leading to chaos during the emergency.
According to reports from Daily Mail, 52 individuals perished as the plane submerged in less than three minutes due to the unreachable depth it sank to, where the wreckage lay undisturbed on the ocean floor for 74 years.
On June 2 of this year, after a seven-year investigation conducted by the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Deep Sea Vision, an Eco Minerals Company, and the Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown series, the wreckage was finally discovered.
Host Josh Gates of the series expressed, “Witnessing the reflective aluminum fuselage gleaming from the ocean floor was an incredibly emotional moment.” The search was aided by the research vessel Fugro Brasilis, which utilized one of the most advanced autonomous underwater vehicles worldwide.
This machine had the capability to scan ocean depths of up to 20,000 feet and sustain submersion for up to four days at a time. Subsequently, the vehicle identified the Clipper Endeavour in two separate sections on the ocean floor.
