“Report Urges Action to Boost Organ Donation Rates”

Date:

A significant report has been launched to address a critical national issue concerning organ donation.

The NHS transplant waiting list has reached a record high, leaving thousands of individuals waiting for organs and tragically passing away before receiving one. In response, the Government has released a report containing crucial recommendations to reverse a concerning trend. The report reveals a decline in support for donation from bereaved families, dropping from 68% to 59% following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Organ Donation Joint Working Group (ODJWG), which gathered insights from 600 donor families and healthcare professionals, highlights the lasting effect of the pandemic on public perceptions of the NHS, end-of-life care, and decisions by grieving families regarding organ donation.

Dr. Gail Miflin, co-chair of the ODJWG, emphasized the report as a pivotal moment for organ donation efforts, stressing the urgent need for collective action from the Government, society, and the NHS to save lives.

With over 8,200 patients currently on the NHS transplant waiting list, marking a record high, nearly 5,000 individuals have lost their lives in the past decade while awaiting life-saving transplants.

One of the families contributing to shaping the report is Jess Cooper from Tadcaster, Yorkshire. Following the tragic loss of her husband, Paul, in a car accident near Harrogate in 2018, Jess made the decision to donate his organs, highlighting Paul’s altruistic nature and the positive impact of organ donation.

The ODJWG, a partnership between NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), drew inspiration from international practices to develop their recommendations. While surveys show widespread support for organ donation, actual consent rates during critical moments remain lower than expected.

The report titled “A Bolder, Braver Approach for Organ Donation in the UK” acknowledges the positive effects of the 2020 law change to “deemed consent” but emphasizes the need for further efforts to encourage organ donation decisions amid times of grief and crisis.

Encouraging individuals to have conversations about organ donation with their loved ones while alive, Jess emphasized the importance of registering one’s decision to ensure that their wishes are honored.

For those interested in registering their organ donation decision, they can call 0300 123 23 23, visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk, or utilize the NHS app in England.
