“Report Warns of Foreign Disinformation Threat to UK”

Date:

Foreign disinformation poses a significant threat to democracies like the UK, according to a recent report that labels such nations as “sitting ducks” in this new form of warfare. The Foreign Affairs Committee is urgently recommending the launch of a public awareness campaign and regular briefings to highlight the severity of this issue.

Furthermore, the report calls for the establishment of a National Counter Disinformation Centre to counter threats from countries such as Russia, China, and Iran. It suggests that social media companies should make their algorithms transparent to the public and enhance collaboration with European allies.

The report emphasizes the importance of defending media freedoms and acknowledges that impartial news is vital for national security and overseas interests. Recommendations include long-term funding for the BBC World Service, increased transparency in social media algorithms, and additional resources for the Hybrid Threats Directorate.

Dame Emily Thornberry MP, the Chair of the Committee, expressed concern over the widespread use of organized disinformation as a weapon to destabilize democracies. She highlighted the need for the UK to be prepared for potential sustained attacks during events like elections.

In response to these threats, the Prime Minister has announced measures to prevent foreign financial interference, including banning political parties from accepting cryptocurrency donations and capping donations from UK citizens living abroad who are still on the electoral register.
