“Residents Call for Action on Dangerous Vulcan Street”

Date:

Residents of Oldham, Greater Manchester, continue to express concerns about the safety of Vulcan Street, where Sharon McLean’s son was hit by a vehicle 26 years ago. The community believes the road is prone to accidents, with reports of serious injuries and near-fatal incidents.

Sharon McLean, reflecting on the lack of safety measures on the road, stated, “It’s a common occurrence. Despite calls for traffic calming solutions like speed bumps and lower speed limits, residents feel that insufficient action has been taken to prevent accidents.”

The prolonged lack of safety improvements on Vulcan Street has left Sharon McLean anxious for the well-being of her family members, especially her granddaughter. She emphasized the urgency for authorities to address the road’s dangers before a tragedy occurs.

Local concerns have been echoed by residents like Jordie Foote and Julie Smith, who emphasize the need for immediate action to prevent accidents involving children and pedestrians. The sentiment is shared by Jorden Rosevere, who feels compelled to take extra precautions, such as using safety harnesses for her son due to the road’s risks, particularly from speeding motorbikes.

Labour councillor Josh Charters has raised the issue with local officials, highlighting recent accidents and property damage on Vulcan Street. He is advocating for traffic calming measures, urging collaboration between the council, police, and residents to enhance road safety, especially with new housing developments in the area.

In response, an Oldham Council spokesperson acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and affirmed their commitment to working with authorities to address speeding and dangerous driving on Vulcan Street. They emphasized the importance of enhancing safety for all road users, particularly with the influx of new housing projects in the vicinity.
