A resilient dog defied the odds by surviving for two days trapped in thick mud after disappearing during a countryside stroll. Krakka, a cherished terrier, failed to return following a walk with her owner, Glynis Elgey, near Shiptonthorpe village in East Yorkshire on April 30. Concerned about Krakka’s disappearance, Elgey sought assistance from Steve Priestman of Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK, an organization dedicated to reuniting lost dogs with their owners.
Despite initial unsuccessful drone searches, the team shifted their focus to a less obvious location. They eventually discovered an area overgrown with nettles and, most importantly, heard a faint whimper emanating from the spot. Rescuers followed the sound to locate Krakka, who was barely visible, buried in dirt within a rabbit warren. It is suspected that Krakka became trapped due to a minor landslide.
Rescuers worked diligently to unearth the distressed pooch, responding to her cries for help. Krakka was successfully liberated from the mud shortly after being found and joyfully reunited with her owner after enduring 48 hours of separation.
Reflecting on the rescue, Elgey expressed her elation, stating, “We started digging – all we could see was a paw. We were overjoyed – we had feared we might never find her again.” She added, “I was ecstatic to see her alive. The first thing she did upon being rescued was give me a kiss. She always returns home, never venturing too far, so I knew something was amiss.”
Video footage captured the heartwarming moment of Krakka’s safe rescue. Subsequent photos depicted the emotional reunion between Elgey and her beloved pet, who appeared shaken but relieved to be freed from the mud.
A spokesperson from Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK recounted the rescue operation, noting that Krakka’s distress signals led the team to her location in a rabbit hole. The joint efforts of pilot Steve Priestman, ground searcher Jennifer Zarek, and Krakka’s owners, David Hudson and Glynis Elgey, culminated in a successful 25-minute extraction process.
