A retired couple, Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, have found a unique way to earn money and travel around the UK by engaging in home-sitting. They began this activity in 2017 to stay active during their retirement years. Home-sitting involves taking care of someone’s residence while they are away, including looking after their pets.
Barbara, a former administrative secretary, and Lawrence, a retired police officer, now take on approximately one home sitting assignment per month, which keeps them away from home for almost half of the year. Barbara expressed that after retiring, they didn’t want to be idle, and home-sitting has been a perfect fit for them.
Home-sitters typically earn a minimum of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets, while taking care of two dogs and a cat can pay £367.92 for the same period. The responsibilities entail about one hour and 45 minutes of daily duties, with a daily food allowance provided. Additionally, travel expenses for meetings and trips to and from assignments are reimbursed.
The Blackwoods, who reside in Perthshire, Scotland, have not only enjoyed the travel opportunities and extra income from home-sitting but have also saved money on utility bills, especially during the winter months. Barbara estimated savings of around £47 per month during a winter assignment lasting three to four weeks and an average of £31 per month from September to April.
The couple emphasized that home-sitting has allowed them to explore various locations in Scotland that they might not have visited otherwise. Lawrence highlighted the flexibility and diversity of experiences as key factors that make home-sitting special for them. They take pleasure in the responsibility of caring for pets and ensuring they feel safe and comfortable in their routine.
Their commitment and care have led to recurring assignments, with one family welcoming them back regularly since their start in 2017. Barbara stated that they have never regretted their decision to engage in home-sitting as it has provided them with a lifestyle they genuinely enjoy.
