Retired Journalist Navigates Cancer Recovery with Boost Shakes

Date:

Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his experience of relying on Boost meal replacement drinks to sustain him through a challenging health journey. Following throat surgery in July to address cancerous growths, Deir’s diet was limited to pureed foods and Boost shakes due to swallowing difficulties. Despite losing weight and facing hurdles during swallow tests, Deir remained determined to regain his ability to eat solid foods.

Under the care of healthcare professionals at St. Clare’s Hospital, Deir underwent radiation treatment and chemotherapy, forcing him to postpone activities like a moose hunting trip. Throughout his cancer treatment, Deir humorously imagined scenarios of his doctor’s reactions, showcasing a mix of gratitude and lightheartedness amidst the challenges he faced.

After completing his cancer treatment, Deir underwent swallow tests and intensive therapy to improve his swallowing function. Gradually reintroducing solid foods into his diet, he celebrated milestones like eating a banana and indulging in comfort foods like mac and cheese and apple pie. Despite ongoing challenges with saliva production and occasional coughing, Deir remains optimistic about his progress and looks forward to enjoying meals at a more relaxed pace, appreciating each bite as a small victory in his recovery journey.
