A retirement home manager has been sentenced to jail for defrauding an 88-year-old woman of over £20,000. Stephanie White, characterized by investigators as deceitful, convinced the elderly woman that she was assisting with bill payments but instead wrote checks to herself to steal the money. The fraudulent activities came to light when the victim fell ill and was hospitalized.
White, aged 58, embezzled a total of £21,697.79 between April 2022 and October 2023. Evidence of White’s parallel beauty business was discovered by the victim’s family in bank statements and handwritten notes where White diverted some of the stolen funds.
Despite being a “trusted” figure at the retirement home, White denied any wrongdoing and asserted that the money was given as a gift, loan, or payment for services rendered. Ultimately, she pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position before the trial.
The victim’s family expressed deep dismay, stating that their relative felt violated and betrayed by someone she trusted for care. The stolen money, accumulated through years of hard work by the victim and her late husband, was meant to ensure comfort and security during retirement.
White was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison for her actions. Detective Constable Vicky Holt from the Vulnerable Adults (VA) team condemned White’s exploitation of a vulnerable elderly woman for personal financial gain, highlighting the breach of trust and care in the situation.
