Reuters Unveils Banksy’s Identity: Robin Gunningham

Date:

A UK graffiti artist has been identified as the renowned street artist Banksy after a thorough investigation by Reuters. Banksy is globally recognized for his distinctive stencil paintings, which have garnered significant sales over the years. The artist’s true identity has been a subject of debate and mystery for a long time.

According to Reuters, Banksy is believed to be Robin Gunningham, who allegedly changed his name to David Jones. The investigation involved reviewing information shared by Banksy and individuals close to him, interviewing insiders and experts, and uncovering undisclosed U.S. court records and police reports in an effort to reveal the artist’s identity.

Despite the claims made by Reuters, Banksy’s longtime lawyer, Mark Stephens, refuted the accuracy of the details related to the artist’s identity. Stephens cautioned against publishing the report, citing concerns about violating Banksy’s privacy, disrupting his artistic endeavors, and posing a risk to his safety.

The investigation, titled “In Search of Banksy,” gathered information from a trip to Ukraine where Banksy interacted with locals and explored a reported conflict with Jamaican photographer Peter Dean Rickards, who allegedly shared images of Banksy’s face. Additionally, the probe examined New York arrest records from 2000, including a purported confession, dismissing speculations linking Banksy to Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack.

The investigation maintains that Robin Gunningham, who purportedly changed his name to David Jones, is the true identity of Banksy, echoing a 2008 report by the Mail on Sunday that also identified Gunningham as Banksy. Despite the assertions, Banksy’s lawyer emphasized the artist’s privacy, artistic integrity, and safety as paramount concerns.

In response to the agency, Banksy’s lawyer highlighted the importance of protecting freedom of expression and the ability of creators to challenge authority without fear of retribution, censorship, or persecution.
