Folkestone, situated in Kent, has long lived in the shadow of its bustling neighbor, Dover. Like many popular coastal destinations in the UK, Folkestone thrived from the Edwardian era to the early 1960s before overseas travel became common.
In recent years, the town faced challenges with the closure of its ferry port in the early 2000s, as the Channel Tunnel emerged as the primary link between the UK and France. However, a local resident, business magnate Sir Roger De Haan, took it upon himself to revitalize the town.
Sir Roger, 75, who grew up in Folkestone and has deep roots there, invested £100 million into rejuvenating his hometown. Reflecting on the town’s past, he described how it had limited attractions for teenagers like himself but has now transformed into a vibrant place with numerous activities for families and children.
The town’s regeneration included the transformation of neglected areas into a thriving Creative Quarter, boasting 80 independent businesses. Visitors from around the world, including Londoners seeking a peaceful coastal life, have been drawn to Folkestone.
Sir Roger’s strategic investments also extended to educational and sporting facilities. The ongoing transformation includes plans to redevelop the harbor area with modern residential and commercial spaces, reminiscent of upscale locations like Dubai or Monte Carlo.
While some residents express concerns about the town’s changing landscape and rising property prices, Sir Roger assures that the unique charm and character of Folkestone will be preserved. He emphasizes that the town’s identity, with its stunning views of the white cliffs and proximity to France, sets it apart from other coastal destinations.
Despite the noticeable economic disparities in the town, with a mix of affluent developments and lingering poverty, the rejuvenation efforts have significantly uplifted Folkestone’s appeal and economic prospects. The town continues to evolve under Sir Roger’s vision, balancing progress with the preservation of its distinct heritage and community spirit.
