Counter-corruption units are expanding their teams to combat a rising trend of female prison officers engaging in inappropriate relationships with inmates, as reported by the Mirror. The Prison Officers’ Association has noted an increase in investigators deployed to address the growing number of officers involved in illicit affairs with incarcerated individuals. Enhanced anti-corruption training is being implemented in prisons nationwide following a series of high-profile arrests and charges related to unlawful liaisons.
The POA is advocating for additional vetting procedures after discovering that at least 45 female prison officers have been apprehended since 2021, averaging nearly ten incidents per year. This marks a significant rise compared to the nine cases reported between 2017 and 2020. Among the list of officers caught for clandestine encounters in jail cells is former OnlyFans model Linda de Sousa Abreu, who was filmed engaging in sexual activity with an inmate.
Recently, prison officer Rebecca Pinckard was sentenced to jail after being caught on her body camera engaging in a sexual act with an inmate in a supply cupboard at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk. Mick Pimblett, Assistant General Secretary of the POA, confirmed the deployment of additional staff to anti-corruption units.
A spokesperson for the POA emphasized the organization’s condemnation of any misconduct or corruption within their ranks. They stressed the importance of thorough recruitment checks and appropriate penalties for those found guilty of misconduct to uphold trust and safety within the prison system.
