Riviera Travel Launches World’s First Solo Traveler River Cruise

Date:

Solo travelers interested in booking cruise vacations often encounter single supplements because most cruise ships are designed for couples. However, Riviera Travel has introduced a solution by launching the world’s first river cruise ship exclusively for solo travelers, the MS George Eliot. Scheduled to embark in 2027 on European itineraries along the Rhine and Danube, the ship will offer eight-day itineraries starting at £2,449 per person and two new 15-day itineraries.

The decision to launch the solo traveler-focused ship follows a 66% increase in solo river cruise bookings at Riviera Travel. Solo travelers now represent nearly 13% of all bookings, with half being repeat customers. Research by the company also revealed that 64% of solo travelers prefer exclusive solo trips to enjoy the freedom of exploring alone while possibly connecting with like-minded adventurers.

To celebrate the launch, Riviera Travel is providing a complimentary upgrade from the middle to the upper deck on European river cruises departing in 2027 (excluding long-haul trips). Travelers must book by October 31, 2025, using the code ‘Upgrade 27.’ More information can be found on rivieratravel.co.uk. In addition to the MS George Eliot, Riviera Alba will debut in 2027 as the brand’s first ship outside Europe, offering itineraries along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia.

Exciting developments are also on the horizon for other cruise lines. Companies like Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises have announced plans for new ships in 2027. Details on ship names and onboard amenities are forthcoming.

For eager cruisers, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and TUI Cruises are preparing to welcome new ships in 2026. Royal Caribbean’s upcoming mega ship, Legend of the Seas, reached a milestone as it was floated out ahead of its summer 2026 maiden season. The vessel will be the third in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class ships, joining Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, offering European itineraries from cities like Barcelona and Rome. With a capacity of up to 5,628 passengers, Legend of the Seas will feature the largest waterpark at sea, a 40ft-long FlowRider surf simulator, captivating theater shows, and a variety of dining options for passengers.
